how odd, i'm actually in a mildly similar situation. i guess i will share. When i lived on the east coast i met this great guy, but i moved away so i never got the chance to hook up or anything, but we kept in touch and talked a lot and i learned he liked me and i shared the same feelings, i however think long distance relationships just can't work out if the physical aspect is non-existant. so now that i'm here, i have an actual relationship, but when i compare it to the other guy (which i shouldn't really) and what i could have had i start to wonder. but that's all, wondering.
i guess if i give advice it would depend on you, such as, is there a chance soon in the future to get together with your current g/f, or is it going to stay long distance. unless if you're truly sure about this one, then i believe you should stick with it. but i don't think so because you are having feelings for this other girl. i agree with SK, that this long distance relationship isn't going to work. and you're still young i'm sure, it's not going to hurt to try it out with this local girl. you're still young, you'll learn along the way, and i'm sure this will be a valuable experience for future, etc. situations.
so somehow, i suppose you'd talk to your girlfriend about how she really feels about the longdistance. like i mean, really talk about it. and try to see if it's cool that you guys take a break...i just hope she's the cool type of girl who's understanding and possibly in a similar situation as you. but getting to know if the girl likes you or not, i suppose just look for the signs such as; she'd rather hang out with you then her other friends, or she seems more interested in making actual conversations other than ones that contain only a 'hi how are you i'm fine' type of dealie.
if you tell us more about the girls, like personalities or how the local girl acts around you, i'm sure more people would be able to help.
go ahead and ask anything about what i said because i have a tendancy of making stupid unclear statements.
